Legend has it that one day, a monstrous fire was ravaging the Amazon in frightening fashion. Terrorized and powerless, the animals watched the disaster unfold.
But suddenly, a hummingbird – the world’s smallest bird – began to draw water from a stream with its tiny beak. And he began to go back and forth to pour a few drops of water onto the blaze, risking his life in the process.
The bewildered animals asked him why he, such a tiny bird, was putting so much effort into such a gigantic problem. Laconic, the hummingbird replied: “I’m doing my bit”.
This inspiring legend means that individual action, no matter how small, in favour of the environment, solidarity and social change, still has incredible power. And a magnificent collective driving force.
